Why I Can’t Look at a Sugar Cube the Same Way Again (Physics is Crazy!)

 I was having my morning coffee today, and I found myself just staring at a sugar cube. It looks so innocent, right? It weighs almost nothing. But after what I learned recently about atomic physics, this little white cube has started to give me a mild existential crisis.

Here is the thing that blew my mind: The entire human race—all 8 billion of us—could physically fit inside the volume of this single sugar cube.

I know, I know. It sounds like I’m making this up, or maybe describing a scene from a Marvel movie. But it is scientifically accurate.

The Illusion of Solidity It comes down to how atoms are built. We tend to think of ourselves as "solid" matter, but we are actually 99.99999% empty space. If an atom were the size of a football stadium, the nucleus (the actual stuff) would be a marble in the center, and the electrons would be tiny gnats flying around the top seats.

Everything else? Just empty space.



If you could use a giant cosmic vacuum cleaner to suck out all that empty space from every person on Earth, we would scrunch down into the size of a sugar cube.

The Heavy Catch But here is where it gets even crazier. You wouldn't be able to pick that cube up.

Because the mass doesn't disappear, that tiny "humanity cube" would weigh about 5 billion tons. That is roughly the weight of 900 Great Pyramids of Giza, all crushed into the palm of your hand. It’s basically how a Neutron Star is made.
