The Moon Is Coming Home (And It’s Not Good News)

I spent my morning spiraling down a rabbit hole of orbital mechanics, and I’ve come to a conclusion: We really take the Moon’s distance for granted. Right now, the Moon is slowly drifting away from us, but what if it suddenly changed its mind? What if it started falling toward Earth? I’m not talking about a movie plot; I’m talking about the actual, terrifying physics of a lunar collision.

The "Big" Changes Are Small at First

Initially, it would just look like a beautiful, oversized moon. But I’d be keeping my eye on the ocean. As it gets closer, the gravitational pull becomes a monster. We’re talking about global tides hundreds of feet high wiping out coastal civilizations before the Moon even gets close to our atmosphere.

The Earth Starts to Crack

Here is what really shook me while I was researching this: The "Tidal Heating." As the Moon approaches, its gravity pulls on Earth’s crust so hard that the friction heats up our planet’s core.

  • Super-volcanoes would wake up.

  • Earthquakes would become a daily constant.

  • Atmospheric Drag would eventually start stripping away our air.

The Beautiful Destruction: The Ring Phase

If there's a silver lining, it’s the Roche Limit. Once the Moon gets too close, Earth’s gravity will literally rip it apart. I’ve always thought Earth would look stunning with rings like Saturn, but the reality is that those rings would be made of our old moon—and they’d eventually rain down as a firestorm of "deorbiting" debris.

Ugu’s Final Thought

It’s a wild scenario that makes me appreciate the boring, stable orbit we have right now. It’s a reminder of how fragile our "perfect" setup in space really is.

I’ve been thinking... if we knew this was the end, would you want to stay and watch the most beautiful sky in history, or would you be the first one on a ship to Mars? I think I'd stay for the view, honestly.
